In 2016, One Direction decided take a much deserved break and give a chance to their solo material. We’ve all wept, that’s for sure. But even though we don’t get to see them promoting and touring together anymore, the boys interacted with each other and mentioned 1D quite a few times over the last months. And I know that six years ago I’ve said I would eventually get over them, but we’re not getting close aren’t we, so… here’s an article about all the things One Direction did during the hiatus that had us in tears.
When Niall commented on Louis’s instagram
Back in July, Louis posted a photo of himself and his son Freddie playing the guitar. Niall commented on his pal’s post: “That’s what I like to see”. I don’t know about you but I think it this was freaking cute.
When Niall went to Harry’s concert
During the hiatus, each one of the boys decided to pursue their own musical career. This was no exception to Harry who started touring last month. Naturally, Niall was there to support his best (band)mate.

When Louis went to Niall’s concert
Apparently, supporting your best friend is a thing among the ~former~ members (not that we’re complaining). On September 21st, Louis was in the same city as Niall and took this opportunity to see his pal performing at the Troubadour. And I gotta say: if this isn’t your favourite friendship among One Direction I don’t know which one is.
Niall acknowledged his presence on stage, much to the fans’ excitement. They also hung out later on and we’ve been blessed with this picture! Louis was “fucking proud” and wanted the world to know it.
Blown away by Niall tonight . Felt so fucking proud !

When Liam sang ‘Best Song Ever’ on TLLS
A couple of weeks ago, Liam was invited to The Late Late Show with a long time friend, James Corden. They engaged in a music battle where they both started singing Solo Artists’ songs and Boy Bands’ songs. Liam surprised everyone when he started singing Best Song Ever (skip to 9:18).
What’s more, Liam stated “I love boy bands, I am in one” – which I loved.
Harry and Niall currently sing songs from One Direction during their shows.
When Liam and Louis attended the BRITS together
Earlier in the hiatus (2016), Liam and Louis attended a very special award show: the one which granted them their very first award in 2012, The BRIT Awards. The whole band was not present but it was enough to warm our tiny hearts.
Later on they joked backstage and gently picked on each other. I’ve been watching this video ten times and I’m still laughing.
This year, Liam came back to the Brits to collect on the band’s behalf another award rewarding their single ‘History’ (yes, they’re still winning awards for a song they released 2 years ago). He said: “One Direction is who we are and who we always will be“.
When Liam and Niall hung out together
This summer, WZPL celebrated their annual Birthday Bash at Indiana Farmers Coliseum. Niall and Liam were invited to perform their solo singles ‘Slow Hands’ and ‘Strip That Down’. The both of them reunited backstage and blessed us with some photos and videos.
They snapped this moment on Instagram and we’re grateful for that.
When Niall talked about Louis’s recent heartbreaking interview
Louis released a very personal interview to The Guardian in which he poured his heart out and shared how he felt not as worthy as his bandmates. Niall was recently asked about it and his response was really sweet: “Louis is an unbelievable guy, a great singer. I’d said we would’ve lost the plot along the way if we hadn’t had Louis. He was a very very very, (yep, that’s a lot of verys) extremely vital member of One Direction. He’s a great man.”
I kinda need a break from all this love.
When Liam gave a lot of thought about babysitting
When Liam was invited to the The Vodafone’s Big Top 40, he was asked who would he trust to babysit his son Bear. His answer was pretty funny and spot-on.
“That’s a big question! I suppose Louis, since Louis [has a son already]. But he’d be my last choice in my head, that’s the funniest thing! But he’s got to be first because he knows more than any of the rest of them. I couldn’t rely on Harry because I feel that my child would come out dressed in something that I just wouldn’t understand and then with Niall, the kid would be putting golf balls on tees. I think I’ll leave Bear with me, although am I the most trusted?“
We love the accuracy and the gentle bullying.
When everybody came to support Louis after the death of his mum
When Louis lost his mum to cancer last year, it was obviously a hard time for him. Harder was that he had to premiere his debut solo single on X-Factor just a few days later. All the boys came to support him on this particularly challenging day.
When Louis and Zayn buried the hatchet
Okay, so technically Zayn is no longer in One Direction but I had to include this one. It’s been known that Louis and Zayn didn’t end things on such good terms when Zayn announced his departure from the most famous boy band in the world. The whole twitosphere witnessed the former friends exchange mean and bitter tweets for months. Their friendship was clearly over which saddened us all very much (rip in peace zouis, partners in crime 2010-2015).
Had it not been for Louis’ mum, the both of them would still give each other the silence treatment. Shortly before her death, she convinced Louis to reconcile with his former bandmate. “My mum said, ‘You’ve got to get back in contact with Zayn, life’s too f**king short’. I met up with him and it was nice. It was that brotherly love. We will always have that love for each other. I can’t speak on behalf of him but we really care about each other.” he told the Sun.
After Johannah’s passing, Zayn tweeted Louis and I felt like Hermione Granger when Ron and Harry made peace in The Goblet of Fire.
@Louis_Tomlinson love you bro! All of your family is in my prayers. proud of your strength and know your mum is too x

Now, please come back because as much as I like listening to your solo albums, I can’t afford to buy 4 separate concert tickets. We miss you.
